10.0.0.1 is a private IPv4 address, and in American homes it most often belongs to a rented Xfinity gateway from Comcast. Typing it opens the gateway’s local Admin Tool, but only when that tool is switched on, and Xfinity now ships it switched off. Before anything else, confirm your gateway before typing anything.
Who Sees 10.0.0.1 as Their Gateway
The address comes from 10.0.0.0/8, the largest of the private blocks in RFC 1918, with room for more than 16 million addresses. You’re most likely to see 10.0.0.1 as your Default Gateway if:
- you rent a WiFi gateway from Xfinity, which uses it for its local admin page
- someone set your own router to a 10.x network, which many routers allow
- you’re on an office or school network, where the admin page belongs to IT, not you
Like any private address, 10.0.0.1 only answers inside its own network. Your neighbor’s 10.0.0.1 is a different device, and nobody can reach yours through that number from the internet. If your gateway reads 192.168.1.1 instead, see how a 192.168.1.1 admin login differs, because the routine and defaults change.
Xfinity Gateways and the Local Admin Tool
The Admin Tool is the web page built into an Xfinity gateway. Xfinity describes it as direct access to the gateway and its settings, including WiFi names and passwords. On newer gateways it now sits behind a switch in the Xfinity app.
Xfinity’s Admin Tool access article sets out the current rules:
- The online access toggle is off by default.
- It exists on newer gateways such as the XB6, XB7, XB8 and XB10. The Wireless Gateway 1, Wireless Gateway 2 and XB3 don’t have it.
- Xfinity suggests keeping access off, turning it on for a technician visit if needed, then switching it off again.
Xfinity’s older article on changing WiFi through the Admin Tool is written for XB2 and XB3 gateways. For XB6 and newer gateways used with WiFi Extenders, Xfinity says to change the network name and password in the app.
The Sign-In Box on a Rented Comcast Gateway
Once access is on, the sign-in is short:
- Step 1: Connect to your home network by WiFi or Ethernet. The Admin Tool only opens from there.
- Step 2: Type
http://10.0.0.1into the browser’s address bar. - Step 3: Enter
adminas the username. - Step 4: Enter the password you created when you turned on access. If you enabled access before February 2026, Xfinity says the default password on the sticker under the gateway may still work.
Keep three separate secrets apart:
- Admin Tool password: opens the 10.0.0.1 page and nothing else.
- WiFi password: the key your devices use to join the network.
- Xfinity ID and password: your account login for the app and xfinity.com.
Your Xfinity ID password won’t open this page, and repeated guessing won’t help. If nobody knows the Admin Tool password, contact Xfinity before anything drastic.
App or Browser? What Each One Can Change
Xfinity presents the app as its more modern, secure option, with the browser page as the backup. This table sticks to what Xfinity’s current articles describe and says where they’re silent.
| Task | Xfinity app | Admin Tool at 10.0.0.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in | Xfinity ID and password | Username admin plus the Admin Tool password |
| Allow browser access | Yes: WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced settings | No, access must already be on |
| Change WiFi name and password | Yes, and Xfinity’s route on XB6 and newer with WiFi Extenders | Documented for XB2 and XB3 |
| Port forwarding | Yes: Advanced settings > Port forwarding | Not covered in Xfinity’s port forwarding article |
| Restart the gateway | Yes: WiFi > Troubleshoot > Restart your Gateway | Not covered in Xfinity’s restart article |
| Turn bridge mode on or off | Not covered in Xfinity’s bridge mode article | Yes: Gateway > At a Glance |
| After bridge mode is on | Account features only | Reached from a device on Ethernet |
Port forwarding needs care. Xfinity warns that a badly set-up forward can expose your network, and the app only forwards to connected IPv4 devices that use DHCP without MAC address randomization. Open only the ports one device needs, never expose an admin page, remote desktop or camera interface, and delete unused rules. See port rules on equipment you rent for the full process.
The 2026 Xfinity App Setting That Affects Local Access
If 10.0.0.1 won’t open on a newer gateway, check this setting first. On supported gateways, the Admin Tool stays unreachable until you allow it in the app. These steps match Xfinity’s support article when this guide was updated:
- Step 1: Open the Xfinity app and go to the WiFi tab.
- Step 2: Select View WiFi equipment, then open Advanced settings.
- Step 3: Select Admin Tool online access.
- Step 4: Slide the toggle to allow Admin Tool access, then select Save.
- Step 5: If this is your first time, create a new Admin Tool password when asked.
- Step 6: While on your home WiFi, open
http://10.0.0.1and sign in with the username admin and that password.
When you’re done, switch the toggle back off, as Xfinity advises. If a menu name has changed, check Xfinity’s article for the current wording.
Other Equipment Numbered in the 10.x Range
Not every 10.x gateway is Xfinity’s, and not every 10.x address is a gateway:
- Comcast Business gateways. Comcast’s quick start guide for its Business Wireless Gateway points to
http://10.1.10.1, with its own business sign-in details, so the residential steps above don’t apply. - Routers set to a 10.x network. The login page sits wherever it was configured, and that brand’s usual sign-in rules apply.
- Work, school and hotel networks. That admin page belongs to whoever runs the network.
- Device addresses. Numbers like 10.0.0.25 or 10.0.0.100 are usually phones, TVs or laptops that received an address from the gateway, not login pages.
If a phone lists a gateway starting with fe80::, that’s an IPv6 link-local address. Use the IPv4 gateway for the admin page.
Bridge Mode and Running Your Own Router Behind the Gateway
Add your own router or mesh system behind an Xfinity gateway and both devices route traffic, which creates double NAT. Bridge mode fixes that by switching off the gateway’s router features so your equipment does the routing.
Xfinity’s bridge mode article gives these Admin Tool steps. On newer gateways, allow access in the app first.
- Step 1: Sign in at
http://10.0.0.1. - Step 2: Choose Gateway > At a Glance from the left-hand menu.
- Step 3: Next to Bridge Mode, select Enable and confirm the warning.
- Step 4: Connect your router to one of the gateway’s Ethernet ports. The gateway may restart.
Know the trade-offs. Xfinity says the private WiFi network turns off, gateway network management goes away, WiFi Extenders can’t be used, and CyberSecure isn’t available. Your devices will then show your own router’s address as their gateway, and port forwarding moves to that router.
To undo it, connect a computer to the gateway by Ethernet, sign in at 10.0.0.1 and set Bridge Mode to Disable under Gateway > At a Glance.
If a Rented Gateway Stops Responding
Start with the gentlest step:
- Step 1: Make sure you’re on your own home network, not cellular data or a public Xfinity WiFi hotspot.
- Step 2: Check that Admin Tool access is still on in the app.
- Step 3: Restart from the app: WiFi > Troubleshoot > Restart your Gateway. Xfinity says this can take up to 12 minutes.
- Step 4: If the app can’t help, unplug the gateway’s power, wait one minute and plug it back in.
- Step 5: Make sure the coax cable is tight at the wall and at the gateway.
A restart keeps your settings. A factory reset wipes custom settings such as your WiFi name and password, and Xfinity treats it as the option for when nothing else has worked. Read what a reset does to a rented gateway before pressing anything on equipment you don’t own.
ISP Help Lines for Locked-Down Equipment
Some settings on rented equipment only change through the provider. Call when the app won’t show your gateway, the access toggle is missing on a supported model, or bridge mode won’t turn off.
- Xfinity (residential): 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489), the Xfinity Assistant chat or support inside the app, according to Xfinity’s contact information.
- Comcast Business: the support contacts in your business account or service paperwork.
- Any other ISP: the number on your bill or in the provider’s own app, not one from a search ad.
Before calling, note the gateway model from its sticker, what you’ve tried and any error message.
